Droplets

Shortlisted for DeMontfort University's prestigious Christopherson Award.

Hand-crafted concertina book. A collaboration project during the final year of my degree, with a student author. The poem called Droplets written by Tom Wingfield, is about a couple's everyday relationship. The title encouraged me to create a piece which was small in scale. I also wanted to create a book which was an artform in itself; the entire book can be view as a whole, rather than traditional books which you have to flick through the pages.

Below, is the outer packaging for the Droplets book. The handcrafted concertina book closes up to sit inside the packaging like so. The bellyband on the outside consists of the book title and the blurb. The whole thing is encased in a transparent plastic packaging, so you can still see into the book.

Also below, are prototypes I created during the initial design stage of designing the Droplets handmade book. I have experimented with droplet-shaped verses, which cast beautiful shadows and typography which is made with different sized needle holes - this emphasises the minuscule nature of droplets themselves.
